The Gentleman's Guide to Buying the Perfect Engagement Ring

Buying an engagement ring is an exciting process, but often it can be hard to know where to begin. At Benjamin Black Goldsmiths, we love helping men to create the perfect engagement ring for their partner, so we have put together a few tips to help make the process a little easier.

Here's are 4 tips for purchasing the perfect ring:

1. Set your budget. Knowing how much you can afford to spend is the first place to start. It doesn't matter what your budget is - we can work with you to create a ring that works within it. The bigger or higher quality the diamond/s and and/or metal carat, the higher the cost. It's important to let your jeweller know what your budget is before you start looking.

2. Think about style. Does your partner like simple and elegant jewellery, or does she like to make a statement? Are her current pieces bold or understated? You don't need to know specifics, but having a general idea of the style aesthetic that would work for your partner is always a good idea. This will help us to determine the types of designs that would be most suitable.

3. Don't be fooled by price. Deals and specials can be alluring, but be careful about buying rings that are made with poor quality diamonds. Refer to our diamond guide to help you determine the difference and get to know the Four C's. Ask questions about the certification of the diamonds, how/where the rings are crafted, and ethical practices. At Benjamin Black Goldsmiths we only use high quality diamonds and all our pieces are individually hand crafted in our workshop - so if you're unsure, don't be afraid to ask.

4. Buy the stone first. If you've searched and can't seem to find the right ring, consider buying a diamond to propose with instead. That way, your partner can be involved in the designing process with you buy his or her side.
